The main route from Russia to the countries of Scandinavia by road or train passes through the territory of Vyborg and Vyborg district – picturesque places, known for its rich history and architecture, economic and cultural projects.
Vyborg District – one of the largest in the region by area and population. Together with a water area of the Gulf of Finland area totals 11,336 square kilometers, with the population of nearly 200,000 people.

On the territory of the municipality “Vyborg region” of Leningrad region located 12 municipal units – 7 town and 5 country ones.
Important geopolitical position on the border of Russia and the European Union and in the immediate proximity of St. Petersburg, the second largest metropolis in the country, is a key factor in the growth and development of the Vyborg district. Today it is a major industrial and tourist center in the North-West of Russia.
Historical and architectural attractions, colorful festivals, vivid sporting events, natural beauty of the Karelian Isthmus attract thousands of visitors from Russia and abroad.

Opening of Alvar Aalto library

On 23 November 2013 after restoration Alvar Aalto Library opened its doors again.

Central Library was designed by Alvar Aalto and built in 1935. It is a masterpiece of International Modernism and in 1995 Alvar Aalto Library was included to the Russian Federation’s List of Objects of Historical and Cultural Value.

The opening ceremony was attended by Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office Sergei Ivanov, former President of Finland Tarja Halonen, Leningrad Region Governor Alexander Drozdenko.


Twin- cities agreement 2013-2017 between Vyborg District and Bodø Municipality.

On the 25th of October 2013 the Head of the Vyborg District administration Alexander Lysov had an official visit to Norway (Bodø).


The Nordic countries come to Vyborg!

Vyborg hosts the Nordic Weeks the first time from 2 till 13 October 2013. The program consists of events arranged by five countries – Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, as well as the Nordic Council of Ministers.
